Home Services / Garage Door Repair
The Problem
Empire Garage Door (Brighton + Pinckney service area) had 62 county and city pages flagged by Google Search Console as "Crawled — currently not indexed" — meaning Google had visited the pages but chose not to put them in search results. Root cause: every single page on the site (including all county pages, city pages, service pages, home, about, etc.) had identical first-position H1 tag <h1 class="brand-name">Empire Garage Door</h1> in the header. Google's template-farm detection algorithm interprets duplicate H1 across pages as low-quality boilerplate.
The Approach
- Pulled the GSC report — 62 specific URLs across Washtenaw / Oakland / Livingston counties + Novi / Wixom / Livonia / Garden City / Brighton / Pinckney cities
- Inspected page HTML — confirmed every page has two H1s: one for brand name (line 289 of template, identical), one for page topic (line 405, unique)
- Built a network-wide sed sweep: <h1 class="brand-name"> → <div class="brand-name"> across all 81 .html files + 2 template files
- Preserved CSS hook (class="brand-name" retained) — only HTML semantic changed
- Backed up all 81 originals to /root/backups/empire-h1-fix-20260511/
The Result
74 duplicate H1 occurrences removed across 81 files. Each page now has exactly ONE H1, page-specific ("Garage Door Repair in Novi, Michigan"). GSC re-crawl expected over 2-4 weeks per page; once crawled, Google's template-farm flag clears and the 62 location pages enter the index.
