Why AppWT for Illinois
Chicago draws most of the attention, but much of Illinois runs on agriculture, food processing and manufacturing. AppWT plans each Illinois site for the market it serves, downtown or downstate, and its documented Illinois work sits in the Quad Cities area of Rock Island County. When an Illinois project calls for a visit, AppWT drives or flies to the client on request.
Illinois at a Glance
Illinois joined the Union on December 3, 1818, as the 21st state. The Census Bureau estimated 12,710,158 residents on July 1, 2024. Springfield is the capital and Chicago the largest city. The state is first or second in the country for soybeans most years, harvesting 648.9 million bushels in 2023, and second for corn. Charles Mound in the far northwest is the high point at 1,235 feet, and Kaskaskia, the first state capital, now sits west of the Mississippi and can be reached by road only from Missouri. Cahokia Mounds, the Lincoln sites in Springfield and Pullman National Monument anchor the history.
Cahokia to the Chicago Blues
The Koster Site records 7,000 years of continuous habitation. Cahokia, near present-day Collinsville, was the largest city of the Mississippian culture, with more than 100 mounds and a 50-acre plaza; Monks Mound at its center rises 100 feet over 13.8 acres, the largest pre-Columbian structure north of the Valley of Mexico.
- 1673: Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet explore the Illinois River
- 1680: La Salle and Henri de Tonti build a fort at the site of present-day Peoria
- 1809: the Illinois Territory is organized with its capital at Kaskaskia
- 1818: statehood; the capital moves to Vandalia in 1819 and to Springfield in 1837
- 1867: the sixth capitol building opens in Springfield, still in use
Territorial delegate Nathaniel Pope pushed the northern boundary to 42 degrees 30 minutes, adding about 8,500 square miles, including the Galena lead district. Chicago gave the world electric Chicago blues and house music, and Thomas A. Dorsey helped gospel take hold at Pilgrim Baptist Church in the early 1930s. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield is the most visited presidential library in the country, and Lincoln, Grant and Obama were all Illinois residents when elected.
The phrase "Will it play in Peoria?" made the state shorthand for the American mainstream. A site that lands with readers in both Chicago and Peoria usually needs different pages for each.
Futures, Farms and Factories
The Illinois economy grew out of farms and stockyards. Corn, soybeans, hogs, cattle, dairy and wheat lead agriculture, and food manufacturing and meat processing still cluster around the old Union Stock Yards. The state ranked fourth among manufacturing states in 2011, with 38 percent of its roughly 18,900 plants in Cook County.

- Cboe Global Markets is the largest options exchange in the United States.
- More than 32 Fortune 500 and 14 Global 500 companies have headquarters in the state.
- Two World Heritage sites lie inside its borders: Cahokia Mounds and part of the Frank Lloyd Wright inscription.
