I use this checklist to make sure taxes and shipping are set before go live. You can run it this week to avoid surprise charges and support calls.
Before you take real orders, I run a quick tax and shipping readiness checklist. These checks prevent surprise charges, refund hassles, and delays.
Tax settings
This is general information. Confirm specifics with your accountant or tax advisor.
- Confirm your business address and tax origin. Your store uses this to calculate taxes for the right place.
- Choose where you collect tax by jurisdiction. This avoids charging tax in places where you should not.
- Mark which products are taxable and which are not. For example, some services or gift cards may not be taxed in some areas.
- Decide whether shipping and handling are taxable. Some jurisdictions require it, and consistency prevents disputes.
- Add tax registration numbers and any exemption certificates. Your store needs these to apply the right rules.
- Test checkout for each expected tax case. Place a sample order and confirm line items and totals match your policy.
Shipping and delivery
- Define where you ship. Create simple zones or rules by country or postal code so choices are clear.
- Pick rate types you can support. Use carrier rates, table rates by weight or item count, or flat rates without edge cases.
- Enter accurate package sizes and weight units. Carriers use these to show the correct methods and charges.
- Set handling time and order cut off times. This keeps delivery promises realistic on product pages and at checkout.
- Name methods in plain language. Buyers should understand Standard, Expedited, and Local delivery without clicking for details.
- Test to multiple addresses with different carts. Compare the expected charge to the shown charge, then place and cancel a sample order to confirm totals.
If you want hands on help, I configure taxes and shipping as part of my E-Commerce and Store Management services. If you run a restaurant, I also set up online ordering and reservations with AppWT Ordering.
