I explain the small set of logo files that covers most needs. You can request these from a designer or organize what you already have this week.
You should keep a small, well labeled set of logo files so you are ready for web, print, and social. This list works whether you are starting fresh or cleaning up old folders.
Master vector files
- Get a vector logo. Vector means it scales to any size without getting blurry. Ask for SVG and PDF. EPS or AI are helpful extras.
- Include full color, one color black, and one color white versions.
- Include RGB for screens and CMYK for print. RGB is red green blue. CMYK is cyan magenta yellow black.
- Ask for a simple brand sheet that lists color hex codes and the font names.
Web and print files
- Transparent PNGs for the website header and footer in common widths like 256, 512, and 1024 pixels.
- JPG for cases where a transparent background is not needed, like on photos.
- High resolution print file. A CMYK PDF is ideal for printers and swag vendors.
- Light background and dark background versions so your logo always has contrast.
Social avatars and icons
- Square avatar that works inside a circle. Keep enough margin so edges are not cut off.
- One master avatar at 1024 by 1024 pixels, plus exports at 512 and 256.
- Favicon for your site in SVG for sharpness and a 32 by 32 pixel PNG for older browsers.
- Monogram or mark-only version for tiny sizes where words are not readable.
Organize and name files
- Create folders such as Master Vector, Web, Social, and Print.
- Use clear names like BrandName Logo FullColor RGB.svg or BrandName Avatar 1024.png.
- Add a Read Me text file with colors, fonts, and contact info for your designer.
- Store a copy in your company drive and a secure backup location.
What to check when done
- Open the SVG and scale it very large. It should stay crisp with no jagged edges.
- Place the white version on a dark background and the black version on a light background. Both should read clearly.
- Print the CMYK PDF on a desktop printer to do a quick color sanity check. Ask your printer for a proof before a big run.
- Upload the avatar to one social profile and confirm it crops well in a circle.
- Confirm the favicon shows up in a browser tab and on mobile devices.
If you want help creating or organizing this set, I can do it as part of Logo and Branding. I can also prepare files for signs and packaging through Print Design.
