I host and care for websites on my own servers. This overview shows what matters in a hosting plan and how to start with the right fit.
What a hosting plan should cover
Your hosting plan should keep the site online, safe and current. Focus on uptime, backups, updates and a simple security layer.
- Uptime means your site answers when people visit. Set up an external uptime checker and review alerts so you know about problems first.
- Backups protect you from mistakes and outages. Make sure backups run automatically and that you can restore to a clean copy when needed.
- Updates keep your content management system, themes, plugins and server software current. Agree on who updates what and on what schedule.
- Security needs a web application firewall, often called a WAF, and a server firewall. Keep your SSL certificate valid so browsers show the site as secure.
How to choose your level
- Site role. If your site drives sales, bookings or support, choose a plan that includes firm routines for backups, updates and security checks.
- Change rate. If you change content or plugins often, plan for regular Website Updates and Maintenance Plans to keep everything stable.
- Complexity. E-commerce, custom code or many integrations need more care and testing than a simple brochure site.
- Access. Confirm how you request changes, who has logins and how to reach help after hours. Write this down so handoffs are smooth.
Quick checks for this week
- Restore test. Ask your host to restore a recent backup to a temporary location and confirm it loads.
- Certificate and domain. Check SSL certificate and domain renewal dates and set calendar reminders 30 days ahead.
- Update window. Pick a monthly update day and note which plugins or extensions are risky and need staging first.
- Basic monitors. Watch disk space, CPU spikes and DNS changes so small issues do not become outages.
How to start
List your must-haves, nice-to-haves and risks you cannot accept. If you prefer to self-serve, use my website quote configurator at appwt.com/quote to pick features and tiers and save and share a quote. If AI traffic matters, AppWT Analytics shows which AI assistants send people, what those visitors do and whether they convert, with AI referrals and AI crawlers reported separately.
I host and care for client websites on my own servers. I offer Hosting & Infrastructure Plans and Web Hosting, plus Maintenance Plans and Website Updates for ongoing care, WAF & Firewall for protection and AppWT Analytics for visibility.
