Speed and CDN tuning improved crawl

By Tony Paris · November 3, 2026 · 2 min read

Drafted with AI and published by AppWT.

I share a case where performance work helped search and AI assistants find content more reliably. I include checks you can use to tighten your own setup.

The industry and problem

I improved crawl for a digital publisher by tuning site speed and a content delivery network. The publisher needed better crawling without changing the design or switching their content system.

Constraints

I could not redesign templates or remove required scripts. Advertising tags and analytics had to stay in place. Downtime had to be minimal and any fix needed to be reversible.

My approach

  • Measured the baseline. I reviewed server logs and the crawl stats in Google Search Console for response time and errors. I also checked AppWT Analytics to see which AI assistants and AI crawlers reached the site.
  • Stabilized the origin. I fixed 5xx server errors, reduced redirect hops, and set keep-alive and compression so responses started quickly.
  • Tuned caching. I set short caching for HTML and long caching for static files like images, scripts, and styles. I added validators so unchanged files could be served from cache.
  • Deployed a CDN. A content delivery network stores copies of files on edge servers closer to visitors and bots. I enabled edge caching for static assets and honored cache rules from the origin.
  • Trimmed page weight. I compressed images, used modern formats where supported, delayed nonessential scripts, and enabled lazy loading for below-the-fold images.
  • Cleaned up discovery signals. I verified a plain XML sitemap with only canonical URLs and made sure robots.txt did not block needed resources.
  • Monitored and iterated. I watched error codes and response time in logs and in crawl stats, then tightened any weak spots.

What I learned

Fast, reliable responses invite more crawling. Cutting errors and latency removes friction, and a tuned CDN helps by serving cached assets at the edge.

Quick checks this week

  • Open Google Search Console and review the crawl stats report for response time and errors.
  • Inspect HTTP headers for HTML and assets. Confirm compression and caching are set.
  • Enable or review your CDN. Make sure static files are cached at the edge.
  • Verify your XML sitemap lists only canonical URLs and is referenced in robots.txt.
  • Watch server logs for spikes in 5xx errors and fix the top causes first.

How I can help

I tune performance and crawling signals as part of Search Engine Optimization and AI Visibility AIVO AEO GEO. I use AppWT Analytics to show which AI assistants and crawlers touch your site.
