I use this checklist to move from design to development without surprises. You can copy it for your next website or app build.
Clean handoff saves time
A clear design to development handoff lists the files, specs, and decisions I expect you to share. It prevents guesswork and keeps user experience, or UX, true to the plan. Use this checklist before you schedule the build.
Files and specs
- Design source file with named pages and components. It speeds setup and avoids mismatched parts.
- Exported assets in SVG for vector art and 1x and 2x images for photos. It keeps visuals crisp on all screens.
- Type styles with families, sizes, and weights. It keeps text consistent across pages.
- Color palette with hex codes and usage notes. It prevents off-brand shades.
- Grid and spacing rules with example measurements. It reduces layout drift during code.
- Interaction states for hover, focus, active, and error. It makes keyboard and touch behavior clear.
Decisions and processes
- Component inventory for buttons, forms, cards, navigation, and modals. It helps the developer reuse patterns instead of rebuilding.
- Content plan with final copy, alt text, and image credits. Alt text is the short description read by screen readers.
- Form specs for fields, required rules, error messages, spam protection, and where submissions go. It avoids rework and lost leads.
- Accessibility checks for keyboard path, focus order, labels, captions, and link purpose. This aligns the build with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, or WCAG.
- Performance budget for image sizes, fonts, scripts, and third party embeds. It keeps pages fast and reduces bloat.
- Browser and device support list. It sets clear targets for testing on mobile, tablet, and desktop.
- SEO basics for page titles, meta descriptions, and heading order. It helps search engines and users understand each page.
- Analytics events you want tracked and consent rules if required. Confirm specifics with your attorney or compliance advisor.
- Deployment plan for domain, SSL certificate, redirects, and sitemap. It smooths launch and preserves existing links.
- Single source of truth folder with version labels. It keeps everyone on the same page when changes happen.
