The River Rouge flows through Wayne. The Wayne Historical Museum preserves local history and artifacts. The city offers multiple parks including Dynamite Park, Civitan Park, and Jaycee Park.
George M. Johnson built a log tavern on the Sauk Trail here in 1824, and Ezra Derby later set up a sawmill, store and blacksmith shop recorded on the plat as Derby's Corners. The town was renamed in 1836 for General Anthony Wayne, and the Michigan Central Railroad arrived in 1838. Wayne became a village of about 800 people in 1869 and a city in 1960, and it covers about 6 square miles. The Prouty and Glass Carriage Factory opened in 1888, and the Unistrut framing system was invented here.
