Newsletter - AppWT Web & AI Solutions Google's AI Mode Is Now Default for Millions -- Here Is What Your Business Listing Must Do Right Now

Sent to 24 subscribers
**This Week in Web and AI**

Google has begun rolling out AI Mode as the default search experience for a significant portion of U.S. users, according to reports confirmed in the past week. This means the AI-generated answer panel now appears before traditional organic results for many queries, pulling business information directly from structured data, your Google Business Profile, and content that AI models can read and cite. Small business owners who have not yet optimized for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are now at a measurable disadvantage because their websites may be skipped entirely in the answer generation process.

The shift reinforces what AppWT has tracked for the past year: AI search engines do not rank pages the way Google's classic algorithm did. They select sources they can verify, summarize, and cite with confidence. If your site lacks clear entity signals, structured FAQ content, and a verified business profile, AI Mode has very little reason to mention your business at all.

**Tip You Can Use Today**

Add a concise FAQ section to your homepage or main service page this week using Google's FAQ schema markup. AI search engines, including Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Copilot, actively pull question-and-answer content when generating responses to local service queries.

Here are the steps to do it:

- Write 4 to 6 questions your customers actually ask, such as "Do you offer free estimates?" or "What areas do you serve?"
- Write a direct 1 to 2 sentence answer under each question.
- Add FAQPage schema markup to the page using a free tool like Google's Structured Data Markup Helper at g.co/sdmh or a WordPress plugin like Rank Math (free tier available).
- Test the markup using Google's Rich Results Test at search.google.com/test/rich-results before publishing.

This single change can increase your visibility in AI-generated answers within 2 to 4 weeks for local and service-based queries.

**Tool Worth Knowing**

Perplexity for Business launched an updated Pro tier this month with a feature called Pages, which lets business owners publish AI-assisted reference content that Perplexity's own search engine treats as a citable source. The tool is available at perplexity.ai and the Pro plan runs approximately $20 per month. The practical use case for a small business is straightforward: create a detailed Pages document covering your services, service area, credentials, and FAQs, and Perplexity begins treating your business as a named entity it can reference when users ask related questions. This is one of the lowest-cost LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) entry points available to small business owners right now.
