**This Week in Web and AI**

Google officially expanded AI Mode as the default search experience for a large portion of U.S. users during the first week of May 2026, pushing AI-generated answer panels above traditional organic results on an even wider range of queries. For small business owners, this means that searches for local services, product comparisons, and how-to questions are increasingly resolved inside the AI panel -- without the user clicking through to any website. Businesses that have not structured their web content for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are losing visibility they do not realize they have already lost.

**Tip You Can Use Today**

Add a dedicated FAQ section to your top three service or product pages this week using a clear question-and-answer format, and mark it up with FAQ schema so AI engines can read and cite your answers directly. Google's AI Mode pulls structured, direct answers from pages that state a clear question, give a one- to two-sentence answer, and include supporting detail below. Here is how to do it:

- Go to your top-performing service page in your CMS (WordPress, Shopify, or similar).
- Add a section titled "Frequently Asked Questions" near the bottom of the page.
- Write three to five questions your customers actually ask, and answer each one in two to three plain sentences.
- Use a free schema generator at technicalseo.com/tools/schema-markup-generator/ to build the FAQ schema JSON-LD code.
- Paste the schema into your page's header or use a plugin like Yoast SEO (WordPress) or a custom code block (Shopify).
- Resubmit the page URL in Google Search Console under URL Inspection once the schema is live.

This one change gives AI engines a clean, structured source to cite when users ask questions that match your business.

**Tool Worth Knowing**

Perplexity for Business, the paid tier of the AI-powered search and answer platform Perplexity AI, added enhanced citation tracking and branded source prioritization features in early May 2026. The Pro plan runs $20 per month per user and allows small business owners to see how often their domain appears as a cited source inside Perplexity's AI-generated answers. This is a direct LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) monitoring tool -- you can spot gaps in your content coverage and identify which competitor pages are being cited instead of yours, then build content to close that gap.
