Landmarks and Places in Deerfield
- The Deerfield Historic Village stands in front of Kipling Elementary School, founded and kept by the Deerfield Area Historical Society as an outdoor museum of five historic buildings that also holds the society's headquarters, with tours run in the summer months. The Caspar Ott House of 1837 is described as the oldest building in Lake County and was restored by Bob Przewlocki. The George Luther House of 1847 holds the society's offices and visitor centre, and the Bartle Sacker Farmhouse of 1854 is presented as a typical nineteenth-century home. Those three are original buildings although moved from their first sites; the carriage house and the little red school house are replicas. Every year the whole fourth grade of District 109 spends a day learning in the school house. Two Metra stations serve the village, Deerfield and Lake Cook Road, both on the Milwaukee District North Line into Chicago Union Station, and the Deerfield station building appears in Risky Business. Pace routes 627, 631, 632, 633, 634 and 635 link the Lake Cook Road station to nearby corporate offices at peak times, and route 471 also serves the village. Amtrak's Empire Builder and Hiawatha pass through without stopping. Road connections are Deerfield Road, Lake-Cook Road, Illinois Route 43, Interstate 94 and Interstate 294, with O'Hare the nearest airport, and there are bike trails reaching neighbouring communities, Lake Michigan, the Chicago Botanic Garden and the Des Plaines River Trail. On utilities: water is bought in bulk from Highland Park, the village runs its own sewage treatment plant on Hackberry Lane discharging into a branch of the Chicago River, a new wastewater plant was finished in 2013 on the same site, an emergency water line joins the village to Northbrook against a failure on either side, Lakeshore Recycling handles waste, recycling and composting, North Shore Gas supplies natural gas, and residents can buy solar energy credits by subscription through a community solar programme. In the 1990s Deerfield was one of six communities bidding for a prototype personal rapid transit system; Rosemont was chosen instead and the system was never built.
