About Evanston, Illinois

Evanston is Chicago's first suburb to the north, a leafy lakefront city defined by Northwestern University and a deep Methodist moral streak that kept it a dry town until 1972. It is the birthplace of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, a leading contender for inventing the ice cream sundae, and in 2021 became the first U.S. city to fund reparations for its Black residents. The mix of collegiate energy, progressive politics, and grand lakeshore architecture gives it a distinct identity among Chicago's suburbs.
