About Naperville, DuPage County
Naperville is an affluent Chicago suburb straddling DuPage and Will counties, founded on the DuPage River in 1831 and now one of Illinois's largest cities. Repeatedly ranked among the safest U.S. cities and best places to live, it pairs a historic downtown and scenic Riverwalk with a high-technology corporate corridor along Interstate 88 and highly rated schools and libraries.
History of Naperville
- Joseph Naper founded Naperville along the DuPage River in 1831; by 1832 about 180 residents had built sawmills, gristmills, stores, and the Pre-Emption House hotel.
- Naperville became the county seat when DuPage County was formally established in 1839.
- In an 1857 state-authorized election, the DuPage County seat was moved from Naperville to the more centrally located Wheaton.
