About Rockford, Illinois
Rockford is Illinois' largest city outside the Chicago metro, straddling the Rock River in Winnebago County about 90 miles northwest of Chicago. Nicknamed 'The Forest City' for its tree canopy and 'Screw Capital of the World' for its fastener and machine-tool legacy, it is the hometown of rock band Cheap Trick and the real-life Rockford Peaches of 'A League of Their Own.'
History of Rockford
- Settled in 1834 as 'Midway,' positioned roughly halfway between Chicago and Galena on the Rock River; renamed 'Rockford' in 1837 for a rocky ford across the river and chartered as a city on January 3, 1852.
- Rockford Female Seminary (now Rockford University) was founded in 1847; social-reform pioneer and future Nobel Peace laureate Jane Addams graduated from it in 1881.
- Inventor John Henry Manny arrived in 1853 to build mechanical reapers and won a famous patent fight against Cyrus McCormick, seeding the city's machine industry.
Landmarks and Places in Rockford
- Anderson Japanese Gardens, a nationally acclaimed 10-acre garden with a teahouse.
- Burpee Museum of Natural History, home of 'Jane,' the world's most complete juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex.
- Laurent House (1952), the only Frank Lloyd Wright building designed for a person with a physical disability, now a museum.
The Rockford Economy
- Aerospace and precision manufacturing remain core: Woodward, Inc. and Collins Aerospace each employ around 2,000 people locally.
- Health care is now the largest sector, led by UW Health/SwedishAmerican, Mercyhealth (which opened the $505M Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in 2019), and OSF Healthcare.
- Logistics is a fast-growing pillar: the UPS Rockford Air Hub (~2,000 workers) is second only to Worldport in UPS Airlines operations, and Amazon runs a large fulfillment presence.
Community Life in Rockford
- Rockford is the hometown of rock band Cheap Trick; the city maintains a self-guided Cheap Trick Fan Trail linking sites from the band's early days.
- The Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (1943-1954) won four championships and inspired the 1992 film 'A League of Their Own'; their home, Beyer Stadium, has been partly restored.
- The Coronado Theatre, a lavish 1927 atmospheric movie palace, has hosted performers from the Marx Brothers and Frank Sinatra to Bob Dylan.
