The village stretches mostly north and south along the Illinois Route 159 corridor, and St. Louis is about 16 miles to the west.

It covers about 6.4 square miles.

Wolf Branch School District 113 and High Mount School District 116 teach younger students, and teens go on to Belleville East or Belleville West in Township District 201.
