The Wilmette Economy
- Wilmette is a commuter village with two rail spines and a bus network. The CTA Purple Line ends at Linden Avenue, Metra trains on the former Chicago and North Western line stop at the station on Green Bay Road between Central and Lake Avenues, and Pace routes 421, 422, 423 and 213 link the stations, shopping centres and high schools. The village ran its own bus service, the Wilmette Wilbus, for twenty years from 1974 until Pace took over its three routes and fleet in January 1995, and the interurban North Shore Line served the village from 1899 to 1955, its right of way now carrying the nine-mile Green Bay Trail. Retail is spread across several centres: Plaza del Lago on Sheridan Road by the lake is described as one of the oldest shopping centres in the country, with Edens Plaza and Westlake Plaza on Lake Avenue east of the Edens Expressway. The village states a commitment to energy efficiency, stormwater management, water conservation, pollution reduction and recycling, and since 2010 has partnered with Go Green Wilmette on an annual Going Green Matters fair drawing more than 1,000 people.
