About Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County
Ann Arbor is a leafy, progressive college town built around the University of Michigan, whose 30,000-plus employees and half-million-strong art fair define the city's rhythm. Known nationally for its bookish culture, tech and biotech economy, and 1960s-70s activist legacy, it blends Big Ten football Saturdays with fairy doors, film festivals, and one of America's most educated populations.
Its nicknames include Tree Town, A2 and the People's Republic of Ann Arbor, and in the 1960s and 1970s the city became a national center of liberal politics, civil rights work and student activism. Tiny fairy doors, a type of installation art, began appearing around downtown in 2005, when the first public door appeared outside Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea. The Borders bookstore chain began here in 1971, when brothers Tom and Louis Borders opened their first store, and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library also stands in the city.
