About Bay City, Bay County
Bay City sits where the Saginaw River meets Saginaw Bay, a Great Lakes port that once ran some 50 sawmills and called itself the Lumber Capital of the World. When the pine ran out, it pivoted to sugar-beet refining, shipbuilding, and heavy manufacturing, leaving behind a downtown of Victorian mansions and drawbridges. It is the county seat of Bay County and the hometown of Madonna.
History of Bay City
- Leon Tromble built a log cabin on the east bank of the Saginaw River in 1831, regarded as the first settler within what became Bay County.
- Originally called Lower Saginaw because deeper water there suited larger ships better than the shallower Saginaw settlement upriver.
- Renamed Bay City when Bay County was organized in 1857; incorporated as a city in 1865.
