About Delta Township, Michigan
Delta Charter Township sits directly west of Lansing in Eaton County, a fast-growing bedroom-and-industry community that is now the most populous municipality in the county with about 33,000 to 34,000 residents. Its name is often traced to the triangular "delta" of land between the Grand and Looking Glass rivers, and its modern identity was reshaped by a $1.2 billion General Motors assembly plant. The township blends the Lansing Mall retail corridor along Saginaw Highway with quiet river settlements like Delta Mills and Millett.
History of Delta Township
- Musgrove Evans platted the area in 1827; the first settlers, Erastus and Sally Ingersoll and their twelve children, arrived in 1835-1836, and Erastus built a water-powered sawmill.
- The Michigan Legislature organized the township on February 16, 1842; the name 'Delta' is linked to the triangular land between the Grand and Looking Glass rivers resembling the Greek letter delta.
- The community around the mills was platted as 'Grand River City' in 1841 but never incorporated, later becoming known as Delta Mills for its grist mill; former Eaton County Sheriff Silas Millett platted a village there in 1874.
