About Fenton, Michigan

Fenton is a city of about 12,000 that began in 1834 as 'Dibbleville' and, by local legend, got its permanent name from a poker game in 1837. Straddling three counties along US-23 (mostly Genesee, with slivers in Livingston and Oakland), it turned a downtown nearly lost to 1970s urban renewal into a lively LeRoy Street dining and shopping district. Its landmarks range from the 1856 Fenton Hotel to a community center designed by world-famous architect Eliel Saarinen.

History of Fenton

  • Established in 1834 as 'Dibbleville,' after settler Clark Dibble, who came from New York and claimed 40 acres of government land.
  • Platted in 1837 as 'Fentonville' by William M. Fenton, who later became Michigan's lieutenant governor.
  • By legend, on August 24, 1837, William Fenton, Robert LeRoy and Benjamin Rockwell played poker to decide the town's name; Fenton won, and LeRoy received LeRoy Street as a consolation prize, with later hands naming additional streets.

Landmarks and Places in Fenton

  • Fenton Community & Cultural Center (1937–1938), designed by internationally known Cranbrook architect Eliel Saarinen with son Eero as consultant, given to the town by philanthropists Horace and Mary Rackham with a $200,000 endowment.
  • 'The Game,' a bronze sculpture unveiled October 5, 2017, depicting the 1837 naming poker match; made of 125 bronze pieces and funded with $150,000 by Phil Hagerman, it includes an empty chair so visitors can 'sit in.'
  • Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille (1856), the town's first and longest-standing restaurant.

The Fenton Economy

  • A commuter and bedroom community for Flint and metro Detroit, with US-23 running as a freeway along its west side.
  • The city operates its own municipal water system.
  • A revitalized downtown dining and retail economy along LeRoy Street.

Community Life in Fenton

  • St. John Applefest: an annual September apple festival and parish fundraiser that draws nearly 30,000 people.
  • The Fenton Hotel Tavern & Grille (1856), the city's oldest restaurant, features a weekend piano bar and is said to be haunted.
  • The Fenton Fire Hall restaurant occupies the renovated 1938 fire house near a downtown waterfall.
