Flint Township is an L-shaped charter township of about 31,400 people that wraps around the west and south flanks of the City of Flint, close enough to share the name but a completely separate government. History of Flint Township

• Elijah Carman and family were the first permanent settlers, building the first log cabin in 1835. The territory had been organized as part of Grand Blanc Township on March 9, 1833.
• Flint Township was formally organized on March 2, 1836. The Jesse Torrey family followed in October 1836, settling roughly 400 acres; other pioneer surnames include Dye, Utley, Bristol, Carter and Miller. The township hall still stands at 1490 S. Dye Road.
• The Fentonville Plank Toll Road was built in 1851 at a toll of one cent per mile, hauling freight wagons between Detroit and Flint along what is now Fenton Road.
