About Lapeer, Michigan

History of Lapeer

  • First settler Alvin N. Hart arrived in 1831 and platted the Village of Lapeer on November 8, 1833; two rival settlements, Hart's Lapeer and Enoch J. White's Whitesville, later merged.
  • Incorporated as a village in 1858 and as a city in 1869.
  • Alvin Hart became a state senator and helped move Michigan's capital from Detroit to Lansing.
