About Lathrup Village, Michigan
Lathrup Village is a 1.5-square-mile city completely encircled by Southfield, about 17 miles north of downtown Detroit, making it a rare enclave municipality. It began in 1923 as one woman's planned community: developer Louise Lathrup Kelley, among the very few female land developers of her era, laid out masonry-only homes on curving, geometric streets. Much of the city is now a National Register historic district.
History of Lathrup Village
- In 1923 developer Louise Lathrup Kelley purchased a 1,000-acre tract in Southfield Township to build the planned "Lathrup Townsite."
- Her covenants required masonry construction and set minimum build costs to guarantee quality, and attached garages were designed into homes decades before they became standard.
- Kelley bundled forward-looking amenities, including a shuttle to shopping areas and automobile financing packaged together with home financing.
Landmarks and Places in Lathrup Village
- The Lathrup Village Historic District (NRHP, 1998), noted for octagonal, circular, and semicircular street focal points and Colonial Revival, Tudor, and ranch-style homes.
- Annie Lathrup School (1927), named for Louise Kelley's mother and the city's designated historic landmark on the National Register; it closed in the late 1970s.
- The geometric, curving street plan itself, a designed departure from the standard grid.
The Lathrup Village Economy
- Primarily a residential enclave of about 4,088 residents (2020) packed into just 1.5 square miles.
- Commercial activity concentrates along the Southfield Road corridor, with the city functioning within the larger Southfield business orbit.
- The tax base is anchored by its planned single-family housing stock rather than heavy industry.
Community Life in Lathrup Village
- The Lathrup Village Historical Society preserves the story of Louise Lathrup Kelley and the planned townsite.
- The city's identity centers on its historic-district architecture and its origin as a rare woman-founded planned community.
- Its demographic evolution, from restrictive covenants to a majority-Black community, is a defining part of its modern civic story.
