About Saginaw, Saginaw County
Saginaw is a mid-Michigan river city that boomed in the 1800s as the self-styled Lumber Capital of the World, then reinvented itself as a General Motors automotive-manufacturing powerhouse in the 20th century. It is the birthplace of Stevie Wonder, the setting name-checked in Simon & Garfunkel's 'America,' and home to one of the most authentic Japanese tea houses outside Japan. Rust Belt decline hit hard, but the city still anchors the Great Lakes Bay Region.

- Boomed in the 1870s-80s on lumber and salt production, harvesting the vast white-pine forests floated down the Saginaw River and its tributaries.
