About Saline, Michigan

Saline is a small Washtenaw County city on U.S.-12 (the old Sauk Trail / Detroit-Chicago Road) about 10 miles southwest of Ann Arbor, named for the salt springs that Native Americans and French explorers once tapped. Once a farm town, it now hosts a major auto-interiors plant (the former Ford factory, today run by FORVIA/Faurecia) and throws one of Michigan's best-known Celtic festivals thanks to a decades-old sister-city bond with Brecon, Wales. Money magazine once ranked it among America's most attractive small cities.

History of Saline

  • Native Americans gathered salt from local springs long before European contact; 18th-century French explorers canoed up and harvested salt too, naming the river "Saline" ("salty").
  • Government surveyor Orange Risdon is generally credited as the city's founder; the settlement was established in 1832 along the Detroit-Chicago (Sauk Trail) road.
  • Incorporated as a village in 1866; railroad service arrived in 1870 via the Detroit, Hillsdale & Indiana Railroad; became a city in 1931.

Landmarks and Places in Saline

  • Rentschler Farm Museum (1265 E. Michigan Ave.) – a 1906 farmhouse plus 11 outbuildings on land farmed since 1825; on the National Register of Historic Places since 2013.
  • Saline Depot / Depot Museum (402 N. Ann Arbor St.) – built in 1870, the year the railroad reached town.
  • Davenport House (Curtis Mansion) – an 1875 Second-Empire frame mansion.

The Saline Economy

  • The former Ford Motor interiors plant – opened in 1966 when Ford moved it from Brooklyn, Michigan – is the city's marquee industrial site; it specializes in plastics and trim.
  • That plant passed from Ford to Visteon, then to Automotive Components Holdings, and in 2012 to Faurecia, which merged with HELLA to form FORVIA in 2022; the Saline business has generated roughly $1.1 billion in annual sales supplying cockpit modules, instrument panels, door panels and consoles.
  • Auto-parts manufacturing and agriculture historically anchor the local economy; freight rail service runs via the Ann Arbor Railroad.

Community Life in Saline

  • The Saline Celtic Festival, launched in 1996 to celebrate 30 years as sister city of Brecon, Wales, draws visitors nationally each summer.
  • Sister cities: Brecon, Wales, UK (since 1966) and Lindenberg im Allgau, Germany (since 2003).
  • The Saline Community Fair is a long-running annual agricultural fair.
