About South Lyon, Oakland County

South Lyon is a fast-growing city of about 11,700 at the far western edge of metro Detroit in Oakland County, where three separate railroads once converged. Its historic downtown centers on the intersection of Pontiac Trail and 10 Mile Road, and its signature landmark is the 1909 'Witch's Hat' railroad depot, named for the conical roof on its operator's tower. Each fall the town's Pumpkinfest draws tens of thousands of visitors to that same downtown.

History of South Lyon

  • The surrounding township, and then the village, took the name Lyon after state legislator (and later U.S. senator) Lucius Lyon.
  • Incorporated as a village in 1873 and as a city in 1930.
  • A major rail crossroads: the Detroit, Lansing & Northern arrived in 1871, an Ann Arbor Railroad predecessor around 1880, and the Grand Trunk Jackson Branch in 1883; the Grand Trunk line ran until the early 1980s, and a CSX Detroit–Grand Rapids main line still passes through.

Landmarks and Places in South Lyon

  • The 'Witch's Hat' Depot in McHattie Park — a 1909 Queen Anne Grand Trunk Western station whose conical operator's-tower roof resembles a witch's hat.
  • McHattie Park Historic Village, which also includes a 1920s caboose, a 1907 schoolhouse and a 1930s chapel.
  • McHattie Park (about 15 acres) and the 130-acre Volunteer Park.

The South Lyon Economy

  • A rapidly expanding bedroom community on Detroit's western commuter fringe.
  • South Lyon Community Schools is a major local institution and employer, covering about 83 square miles across three counties with eight elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools.
  • Downtown small businesses and dining, including the locally popular Witch's Hat Brewing Company.

Community Life in South Lyon

  • South Lyon Pumpkinfest: a fall festival running more than 40 years that welcomes over 55,000 people to the historic downtown with a parade, craft show, live music and family activities.
  • Witch's Hat Brewing Company, named for the town's landmark depot.
  • The Witch's Hat Depot Museum and Historic Village preserve local rail and pioneer heritage.
