Westland is a Metro Detroit suburb in western Wayne County, Michigan, that famously took its name from a shopping mall. Carved out of the former Nankin Township in 1966, it is a largely residential, blue-collar community that is now one of Michigan's ten most populous cities. Its most storied site is Eloise, a sprawling former poorhouse and psychiatric complex on Michigan Avenue.

History of Westland

• The area was home to a Potawatomi village and served as hunting territory for Algonquian tribes before white settlement began around 1824.
• Organized as part of Bucklin Township in 1827, the land was set off as Lima in 1829 and renamed Nankin Township, after the Chinese city of Nanking, to avoid a duplicate Michigan post office name.
