About Wyandotte, Wayne County

Wyandotte is a riverfront Downriver suburb of Detroit, sitting on the Detroit River about 14 miles southwest of downtown, and it is the oldest incorporated city in Wayne County after Detroit itself (chartered in 1866). Named for the Wyandot (Wendat) people, it was a heavy-industry town where the first commercial Bessemer steel in the United States was produced and the nation's first steel-hulled ship was launched. Today its walkable Biddle Avenue downtown hosts one of Michigan's largest art fairs each July.

History of Wyandotte

  • In the 18th century the site was a Wyandot village called Maquaqua, which French colonists rendered as Monguagon.
  • Major John Biddle bought about 2,200 acres from the federal government in 1818 and named his roughly 1835 estate 'Wyandotte' for the Wyandot people.
  • It was founded as a village of Ecorse Township in 1854, chartered as a city on December 12, 1866, and held its first city election in April 1867.

Landmarks and Places in Wyandotte

  • Ford-MacNichol Home / Wyandotte Historical Museum (1896)
  • BASF Wyandotte site on the north riverfront

The Wyandotte Economy

  • Nineteenth-century iron and steel (Eureka Iron Works) and shipbuilding defined the early industrial economy, with local shipyards producing more than 200 vessels.
  • BASF still operates a chemical site on the city's north riverfront.

Community Life in Wyandotte

  • The Wyandotte Street Art Fair, first organized in 1961 by the Acanthus Art Society, is one of Michigan's largest art fairs, held each July along Biddle Avenue.
  • The Wyandotte Historical Museum is housed in the Ford-MacNichol Home, an 1896 mansion built by plate-glass pioneer Edward Ford for his daughter.
  • Bishop Park on the riverfront is the city's largest green space and was once the departure dock for the Boblo Island ferry boats.
