About Wyandotte, Michigan
Wyandotte is a riverfront Downriver suburb of Detroit, sitting on the Detroit River about 14 miles southwest of downtown, and it is the oldest incorporated city in Wayne County after Detroit itself (chartered in 1866). Named for the Wyandot (Wendat) people, it was a heavy-industry town where the first commercial Bessemer steel in the United States was produced and the nation's first steel-hulled ship was launched. Today its walkable Biddle Avenue downtown hosts one of Michigan's largest art fairs each July.
History of Wyandotte
- In the 18th century the site was a Wyandot village called Maquaqua, which French colonists rendered as Monguagon.
- Major John Biddle bought about 2,200 acres from the federal government in 1818 and named his roughly 1835 estate 'Wyandotte' for the Wyandot people.
- It was founded as a village of Ecorse Township in 1854, chartered as a city on December 12, 1866, and held its first city election in April 1867.
