About Gloucester City, New Jersey
History of Gloucester City
- Dutch traders built Fort Nassau in the 1620s along the Delaware River near present-day Gloucester City, one of the earliest European outposts on the river; the area later lay within the New Sweden colony (1638-1655).
- Recorded as Axwamus in 1677 and surveyed in 1689, the town was named for Gloucester, England, and was incorporated as Gloucester City on February 25, 1868, from portions of Union Township.
The Gloucester City Economy
- From the 1890s to the 1940s the Welsbach Company manufactured thorium gas mantles in Gloucester City using imported monazite ore; the radioactive waste produced the Welsbach and General Gas Mantle (Camden Radiation) Superfund site, added to the National Priorities List in 1996, from which the EPA has removed more than 200,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil.
- New Jersey included Gloucester City in an Urban Enterprise Zone in 2004, reflecting its shift away from a 19th-century textile-manufacturing and Delaware River port economy.
Community Life in Gloucester City
- Rock-and-roll pioneer Bill Haley and His Comets performed at the Twin Bar in Gloucester City in the early 1950s.
