About Yeadon, Pennsylvania

Yeadon is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on the southwestern edge of Philadelphia across Cobbs Creek. Part of Darby Township until it incorporated in 1893, it took its name from Yeadon Manor, named for landowner William Bullock's hometown in Yorkshire, England. About 12,054 residents fill roughly 1.6 square miles. It is best known as home of the Nile Swim Club.

History of Yeadon

• Yeadon was part of Darby Township until it incorporated as a separate borough on December 18, 1893, after 30 of 37 area landowners signed the incorporation applications.
• The borough's name derives from Yeadon Manor, the estate of landowner William Bullock, who named it after his hometown of Yeadon in Yorkshire, England.
• The area traces to a 17th-century Swedish colonial settlement recorded as Molndal in 1645, long before the borough's founding.

The Yeadon Economy

• Yeadon is a primarily residential commuter suburb in the Philadelphia metropolitan area; census commuting data show its daytime population drops by roughly 30 percent as residents leave for work, many commuting to Center City Philadelphia.
• The William Penn School District, which serves Yeadon along with Aldan, Colwyn, Darby, East Lansdowne and Lansdowne, is a significant public-sector employer for the community.

Community Life in Yeadon

• The Nile Swim Club in Yeadon, continuously open since July 11, 1959, was the first private swim club owned and operated by African Americans in the United States, funded by 326 original bondholders who each contributed $250.
• Following World War II, Yeadon developed into a prominent middle-class African American suburb of Philadelphia.
• Notable people connected to Yeadon include Rose Coyle (Miss America 1936), Philadelphia Phillies infielder Tony Taylor, and Frank Sheeran, the 'Irishman.'
