Web & AI Solutions AI Engines Are Answering Your Customers' Questions -- Is Your Business the One They Cite?

Sent to 34 subscribers
**What Is Changing Right Now**

AI search tools -- ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot -- now handle an estimated 12 to 18 percent of English-language informational searches, up from under 2 percent just a year ago. When a potential customer asks one of these tools "Who is the best plumber in Metro Detroit?" or "What is the top Michigan marketing agency?", the AI either names your business or it does not. Showing up in these AI-generated answers is called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), and it is quickly becoming as important as traditional Google rankings.

**Why Traditional SEO Is No Longer Enough**

Classic SEO aims for a ranking on a search results page. GEO -- also called LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) or AIVO (AI Visibility Optimization) -- aims for a citation inside a generated answer. AI tools look for businesses with strong authority, consistent information across the web, and content that directly answers specific questions. Brands that answer questions clearly and completely, and back those answers with verifiable facts, earn citations. Businesses that rely only on keywords and backlinks often get left out entirely.

**Three Steps You Can Take Today**

- Write at least one page or blog post that directly answers the top question your customers ask you, with a clear answer in the first sentence.
- Make sure your business name, address, phone number, and hours are identical across your website, Google Business Profile, and every directory listing.
- Add FAQ schema markup to your key service pages so AI crawlers can read and cite your answers quickly.
- Update your core content pages at least once every 90 days to signal that your information is current and reliable.

**Track Whether It Is Working**

Check Google Analytics or Search Console for referral traffic labeled as coming from Perplexity or ChatGPT -- both platforms send trackable clicks. You can also manually run your top service queries through ChatGPT and Perplexity once a month and note whether your business appears in the answers. This simple test shows you exactly where you stand in AI search today.

**Your Next Step**

Pick one service page on your website this week, rewrite the opening paragraph so it directly answers the most common question about that service, and add an FAQ section with at least three questions and clear, factual answers.
