Ahrefs data comparing March and September responses in the United States found ChatGPT leaning toward original research, government and regulator sources, and firsthand product testing. In the same study, PubMed climbed from 64th to fourth among cited domains while WebMD dropped from 18th to 79th, and Reddit's share of cited answers fell from 19.1 percent to 2.3 percent.

The message for a Michigan small business is direct. Pages that summarize what other sites already said earn fewer citations. Pages built on your own numbers, photos, tests, and service records earn more.

Add the publish date, the author name, and a short line on how you gathered the information. Google also announced on October 16 that AI Mode and AI Overviews will show inline links more often and higher in responses, so original pages have more room to earn a click.
