Web & AI Solutions AI Is Recommending Your Competitors -- Here Is How to Get Your Business Cited Instead

Sent to 35 subscribers
**Your Customers Are Now Asking AI Before They Search Google**

Consumers are choosing businesses based on answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot -- not just Google search results. According to BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of consumers used AI tools to find local businesses in the past year, up from just 6% the year before. Despite that surge, a 2026 SOCi analysis of more than 350,000 business locations found that ChatGPT recommends only 1.2% of local businesses. That gap is a direct opportunity for Michigan small business owners who act now.

**What AI Systems Look For When Choosing a Source**

AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity do not rank pages the way Google does. They pull specific passages from content they trust, then build an answer from those pieces. Research shows that only 17% of AI Overview citations come from pages that also rank in Google's organic top 10. In other words, ranking first on Google does not guarantee you appear in AI-generated answers -- and getting cited by AI does not require a top Google ranking either. These are now two separate games, and small businesses need to play both.

**Four Steps You Can Take This Week**

Improving your AI citation rate does not require a complete website rebuild. Start with these four actions:

- Write answer-first content. Open each page section with a direct answer in the first one or two sentences, then add supporting detail.
- Add FAQ schema markup to your service and location pages so AI systems can parse your content cleanly.
- Make sure AI crawlers can access your site. Check your robots.txt file and, if you use Cloudflare, verify the AI Crawl Metrics panel to confirm bots are not blocked.
- Keep content fresh. Perplexity heavily weights recency, and both ChatGPT and Gemini use publication dates as trust signals. Update your highest-traffic pages at least every 90 days.

**Consistency Across the Web Builds the Trust AI Requires**

AI systems also check third-party sources to verify your authority. Your business name, address, phone number, and service description must match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, industry directories, and review platforms. Inconsistent information lowers the confidence an AI system places in your brand, and it will cite a competitor whose information is cleaner and more consistent instead.

**Your Next Step**

Open ChatGPT or Perplexity right now and type the question your best customer would ask to find a business like yours. Check whether your business appears in the answer -- and take note of which competitors do.

If your business is missing from AI-generated answers and you want a clear path to fixing that, AppWT Web & AI Solutions can help. Schedule a free consultation at https://appwt.com/schedule or call +1 (888) 565-0171.
