Web & AI Solutions Google's New AI Overviews Filtering Update Is Cutting Small Business Visibility -- Here's How to Fix It

Sent to 24 subscribers
**What Changed and Why It Matters**

Google rolled out a significant update to AI Overviews in early May 2026 that tightened the filtering criteria for which sources appear inside AI-generated answer panels. Small business websites with thin service pages, missing structured data, or low E-E-A-T signals are getting dropped from AI Overview citations at a higher rate than before. If your business was appearing in those panels last month and has seen a traffic dip this week, the update is likely the cause.

**What You Can Do Right Now**

Start by auditing your top five service or product pages against these criteria:

- Add first-person author credentials or a clear "About" section that states who provides the service and how long the business has operated
- Make sure each page includes FAQ schema markup with at least three questions and direct answers
- Check that your Google Business Profile and website NAP (name, address, phone) data match exactly
- Add a clear date stamp or "last updated" line to any page you want Google to treat as current and authoritative

**Why Structured Data Matters More Now**

Google's AI Overview system pulls answers from pages that signal clear, verifiable facts. Schema markup tells the AI layer what your page is actually about, who wrote it, and when the information was last confirmed. Without schema, your page competes on text alone, and that puts small business sites at a disadvantage against larger publishers who have implemented structured data at scale.

**Your Next Step**

Log into Google Search Console today, open the Search Results report filtered by your branded and service keywords, and compare clicks from the past 28 days against the prior period to confirm whether AI Overview filtering is affecting your traffic.

If your traffic report shows a drop and you need help restoring your AI Overview visibility, contact AppWT for a free consultation at https://appwt.com/schedule or call +1 (888) 565-0171.
