I explain first party analytics in plain words and why it matters for speed and privacy. I share a checklist for what to measure and how to present weekly reports without sending data off your network.
What first party analytics means
First party analytics means your site collects and reports its own data, under your domain, without sending it to outside trackers. You decide what to collect, where to store it, and how long to keep it. A third party cookie is an identifier set by someone other than your site, so first party tools avoid relying on those.
Why it matters
Fewer third party scripts can improve page speed, and fewer outside calls reduce exposure of visitor data. Boards and managers get cleaner weekly numbers because you reduce ad platform noise and known bots. For legal or policy details, confirm specifics with your attorney or compliance advisor.
What to measure
Pick a small set you can explain in one minute.
- New and returning visitors
- Top pages and entry pages
- Search terms and on site search
- Referrals, including AI assistants
- Conversions and a few key events such as form submits, call clicks, file downloads, or orders
If AI assistants send people to your site, separate AI crawler visits from human sessions in your reports.
How to present it
Build one weekly view that highlights trends and exceptions. Use a simple traffic overview, a short list of key pages, a short list of referrers by channel including AI assistants, and a conversion table by source. Keep raw identifiers out of exports. Share an internal dashboard, or export a PDF for your board packet.
How to run it on your network
Host the tracking file under your domain. A content delivery network is a service that speeds up files, and it can serve your tracking file too. Use server logs to validate counts and catch obvious bots, and add event calls only for actions that matter. Truncate IP addresses, avoid fingerprinting, and do not collect fields you do not need. Set a clear retention period and review it quarterly.
How I do this for my sites
I use AppWT Analytics to see which AI assistants refer traffic, what those visitors do, and whether they convert. AI referrals and AI crawlers are reported separately, which keeps my weekly view clean. I connect outcomes like form leads or orders to my inbox or AppWT CRM.
