I explain how I report on email campaigns without UTM tags or tracking pixels. You get clear steps to use on domain pages, simple redirects, and form data to produce a weekly report.
Why this matters
You can report on email campaigns without UTM tags by using unique on domain pages and first party redirects tied to your forms. This respects reader privacy, keeps data on your systems, and avoids third party tracking pixels. I also run my newsletter with no click tracking and no open tracking.
The technique
- Pick a short campaign slug. Example structure: /spring-offer or /board-brief. Use a slug that is not linked anywhere else.
- Choose one: make a simple landing page at that slug, or make a redirect page at that slug that forwards to your normal page. A redirect page should log the hit on your server, then send the visitor to the destination.
- Put only those slugged links in the email. Do not add UTM tags. Do not add tracking pixels.
- Capture outcomes on site. Add a hidden field to each form that records the current page path. Store that field with the lead in your CRM. If you take orders, also record the page path or a short code in the order notes.
- Optional fallback for offline actions. Include a short reply code that a caller or staff member can type into the form later, such as SPRING or BRIEF.
- Reduce bot noise. Focus your reporting on form submissions and completed orders tied to the slug. For redirect pages, ignore hits with no follow up pageview or no form activity.
Weekly report format
- Campaign name and slug used in the email.
- Visits to the slugged page or redirect during the date range.
- Leads with the form field matching that slug.
- Orders or bookings that include that slug or code.
- Notes. Anything unusual that could explain a change, such as a site update or a second email.
This gives you clear outcomes without tagging links in the email itself, and it keeps measurement first party. You can save these slugs for the record, reuse patterns, and compare week to week.
If you want help, I set up first party tracking using AppWT Analytics and tie form data into AppWT CRM. I also teach this in Marketing Training, and I can automate parts of the report with Business Automation.
