I share one practical way to speed up WebGL product experiences. You get clear steps to lazy load the viewer and assets while keeping pricing and options responsive.
Why it matters
Use lazy loading to make WebGL experiences load faster. In a configurator, buyers can start choosing options, reading notes, or seeing a preview while heavier pieces load. This keeps pricing, bill of materials (BOM) and computer aided design (CAD) exports responsive because they start after the first frame.
The technique
I use lazy loading for the 3D engine and assets. The page ships a light shell first, then loads the viewer code and big files only when needed. That reduces initial downloads and time to first interaction without removing features.
Exact steps
- Show a poster image where the canvas will live. Use a small image that reflects the default product.
- Defer the viewer code. Place it in a separate bundle and load it only on user intent, such as a click, or when the canvas enters the viewport.
- Keep the initial HTML, CSS and a tiny script focused on the headline, key controls and the get quote button.
- Load a lightweight starter scene first. Use simplified geometry and small textures, then stream the detailed model in the background.
- Queue non visual work. Run pricing, bill of materials and computer aided design jobs after the first frame renders, not before.
- Lazy load textures and material variants on demand. Do not fetch finishes or accessories the user has not opened.
- Version and cache assets. Use hashed file names and long cache headers so returning visitors reuse downloads.
- Provide clear status. Show a short message like Loading details while large files stream.
- Add a timeout fallback. If heavy assets take too long, keep the basic view usable and offer a Try basic mode control.
- Measure. In your browser developer tools, confirm the viewer bundle and models are requested only after intent or scroll.
How I can help
If you want this optimization in a configurator or 3D quoting tool, I build and tune them through Custom Development > Applications and Custom Development > Features & Add-ons.
