About Clawson, Oakland County
Clawson is a compact 2.2-square-mile Detroit suburb in southern Oakland County, one of the smallest and most walkable communities in the county, sitting about 12 miles north of downtown Detroit and completely surrounded by Troy and Royal Oak. Branded the 'Little City with a Big Heart,' it packs an indie downtown of restaurants, shops and a historic 1941 theater into tight, affordable older neighborhoods. Its best-known attraction, Leon & Lulu, fills a former roller rink that still has its skates and hockey scoreboard.
History of Clawson
- Originally known as 'Pumachug' and 'The Corners' — the name imitated the 'pum-a-chug, pum-a-chug' sound of a cider mill and saw mill running at the main intersection.
- The name 'Clawson' comes from a misspelling of the surname of early settler John C. Lawson.
