About Detroit, Wayne County
Detroit is the largest city in Michigan and the seat of Wayne County, sitting on the Detroit River across from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It put the world on wheels as the birthplace of the American auto industry and gave popular music the Motown sound, and it remains a comeback story of grit, techno, Coney dogs, and hard-edged culture.
Detroit's nicknames tell much of its story: Motor City for the auto industry, Motown for the record label Berry Gordy Jr. founded in the city, and Hockeytown for the success of the Red Wings. Locals also call it The D and The 313. The Lions, Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings all play in Detroit, and the Fox Theatre and the Detroit Institute of Arts rank among its best-known cultural landmarks. TechTown Detroit, near Wayne State University, works as a business incubator for startups and entrepreneurs.
History of Detroit
- Became the heart of the global auto industry after Henry Ford introduced the Model T in 1908 and pioneered moving-assembly-line production; within about a decade the city was nicknamed the Motor City.
