We Know Burton
Burton is Genesee County's second largest city. Over seven miles of trails feature native Michigan flora and fauna. The Mounds is Michigan's best ORV park with varied terrain. Nearby attractions include Stepping Stone Falls and Crossroads Village.
For about 20 years the area was known as the Atherton settlement, after brothers Shubael and Perus Atherton and their nephew Pliny Atherton Skinner settled on Thread Creek in 1835. Burton Township was organized on April 7, 1856, and named for local farmer John Burton. Residents voted to incorporate on May 16, 1972, the city formed on July 1, 1972, and it now covers about 23.4 square miles of land. The name of the For-Mar Nature Preserve joins the first names of donors Forbes and Martha Merkley.
