The community began as Geneseeville, where Luman Beach and Addison Stewart settled in 1833, and it was platted in 1858. The township was organized on April 2, 1838, at a meeting in the Cold Water settlement, which teetotalers had founded. The name traces through Genesee County, New York, to a Seneca word meaning Beautiful Valley. Genesee Charter Township covers about 29.1 square miles of land and 1.2 of water, and Mount Morris Township split off from it in 1955.
