Settlers from New York named the town for Mount Morris, New York. Frederick Walker settled the village site in 1836 and served as its first postmaster, and the post office opened on July 11, 1837. The plat was first filed as Dover in 1862, the year Flint and Pere Marquette trains began running here from East Saginaw. Mount Morris became a village in 1867 and a city in 1929, on about 1.1 square miles. As a boy, Charles W. Nash, who later founded Nash Motors, worked as a farmhand here and learned carpentry.
