Abram Caleb Truax founded the settlement in 1816 with a sawmill, a church and a store. It was laid out as Truaxton in 1834 and renamed Trenton in 1847 for the Trenton limestone quarried nearby. Trenton became a village in 1855, annexed Sibley in 1929 and became a city in 1957, and it has about 7.2 square miles of land. In 1911, county engineer Edward N. Hines painted the first center line on a road along River Road. Elizabeth Park, given to Wayne County in 1919, sits mostly on the man-made Slocum's Island.
