We Know Wyandotte

In the 18th century the site was a Wyandot village called Maquaqua, which the French rendered as Monguagon. Wyandotte was founded as a village in 1854 and chartered as a city on December 12, 1866, the oldest incorporated city in Wayne County after Detroit. At the Eureka Iron Works the first Bessemer steel in America was made on September 6, 1864, and in 1873 a local yard built the Sport, the earliest steel-hulled vessel in the nation. The city has about 5.3 square miles of land and 1.6 of water, and it runs its own electric utility.
